Course Description:
Effective science communication is essential in bridging the gap between research and society. Whether engaging with peers, policymakers, investors, or the general public, scientists must convey complex ideas clearly and compellingly. This course provides scientists with the tools to craft engaging, accurate, and accessible content, making their work more visible and impactful beyond the academic sphere.
In this two-day workshop, you will learn the principles of science communication, including how to frame your research for different audiences, identify key relevance criteria and write compelling leads. We will practice creating and editing news articles and longer forms of content, based on the research of participants or other scientific publications. Through hands-on exercises, you will practice simplifying technical language, structuring narratives, and making science both informative and engaging. We will cover key channels for public scientific communication (e.g. EurekAlert) and dive into the specifics of publishing on social media.
By the end of the course, you will be better prepared to communicate their research persuasively while maintaining scientific integrity. Moreover, you will learn how to navigate media interactions, avoid common pitfalls, and contribute to a well-informed society.
